Paula Deen has crossed a line

I am obsessed with Food Network. Often times I get overcome with whimsy while I’m
watching it, and minutes later I find myself downloading the recipe, buying all the
ingredients, and wasting an entire day trying to make something completely beyond my
range of cooking skills. So I’ve decided to write reviews of some of the recipes – how
do they measure up in the real world? In a real kitchen like mine, which has literally 18
square inches of counter space?

RECIPE REVIEW: Paula Deen’s “Grandgirl's Fresh Apple Cake from Georgia”

Sounds delectable, doesn’t it? The word Fresh! The word apple! And the word Cake! I’m
done. Let’s make it.

Now, I’m no stranger to Paula Deen’s cooking. The woman’s recipes often look like this:

Butter, for greasing pan
2 cups butter
1 1/2 cups butter oil
1/4 cup butter juice
3 cups all-purpose butter
1 teaspoon baking butter
3 cups peeled and finely chopped butter
1 cup shredded butter
1 pinch of butter, for taste

Preheat the oven to 325 degrees F. Generously grease a tube pan.

For the cake: in a large bowl, combine the butter, butter oil, butter juice, and baking butter; and mix well. Fold butter, butter, and butter into batter. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and bathe in it until you go into cardiac arrest.

I have made many successful Paula Deen recipes. I love her personality as well. I love how she is an independent, strong woman, yet maintains her grace, humility and kindness. She knows what life is all about – and she knows how to make it taste good. So it pains me to say this, but Paula, with your “Grandgirl's Fresh Apple Cake from Georgia,” you have crossed the line.

I was drooling when I saw you make this on TV. It is a bundt cake with apples and coconut and cakey goodness – and to top it all off, you soak it for an hour in this buttery buttermilk sauce to keep it moist and rich. So I tried making it myself recently.

It was fun to make, I’ll admit. But after soaking it for an hour in the buttery buttermilk sauce, and I turned it over onto a rack to cool, I saw the sauce had only soaked through half the cake. And then it started dripping down all gooey and sticky like onto the cookie sheet beneath. Honestly, it looked a little like snot:

cake2.jpg

When it had properly cooled, I cut a piece. The top part, which had not been soaked with the sauce, tasted a bit like a dry muffin, but wasn’t half-bad. But the bottom part. Oh my god. It was disgusting. It was like eating a sponge dipped in motor oil. I think that if the sauce had soaked all the way through, it would have been evenly distributed and probably tasted good. But for whatever reason, this sauce decided to lodge itself in the bottom 2 inches of the cake, creating a kind of sludge that was just too much.

Now I may have done something wrong to cause this – I am not infallible in the kitchen. But this was a recipe for disaster. Literally! Hiyo! Seriously, when you play with that much buttery buttermilk sauce – in a cake that already contains 2 sticks of butter, vegetable oil, 2 cups of sugar and 2 cups of coconut, you’re asking for trouble.

I let the cake sit there under a piece of foil for a few days. I thought about using pieces of it to grease the squeaky doors in my apartment, but I just ended up throwing it away.

*********NOTE: AS MANY OF YOU COMMENTERS SEEM TO BE COMPLETELY UNAWARE: I'M A COMEDIAN. THIS IS SUPPOSED TO BE FUNNY. I ALSO LOVE PAULA DEEN AND HAVE THE UTMOST RESPECT FOR HER, AND ADMIRE HER GREATLY. THIRDLY, SHE HAS SEEN THIS ENTRY, THINKS IT'S FUNNY, AND IS EVEN GOING TO USE AN EXCERPT OF THIS IN HER MEMOIRS. SO EVERYBODY JUST CALM DOWN. Learn to take a joke. That's one of the things I love about Paula Deen. She's able to laugh at herself and the world around her.***********

That's a waiting heart attack if you even take one bite...what was she thinking?

Just read your post. I agree with you 100%. I love Paula ...have made many of her recipes and for the most part all were successful. Maybe a tweak here and there, but I do that with most recipes anyway. I was so excited to see her show featuring Grandgirl's Apple Cake...I too ran out and bought everything, made it TWICE and oh Gosh...WHAT A MESS each time. Tremendous dissappointment.

I just made Paulas fried chicken recipe and its terrible.
I make Sunday Dinner for my family and an elderly neighbor and I can not give her any of the chicken.
The amount of salt is so high in the chicken coating she would have a stroke.
When I made Paulas house dressing I didn't even use a cup of salt and it was still terrible.
Paula needs to realize that there are people out here with medical conditions that can't eat all her rich and salty foods.

Y'all leave Paula alone. She has said many times, "I'm your cook, not your nurse."

I've watched Paula since her first appearance on Food Network. I always loved and admired her genuine character and wholesomeness. Apparently, fame, fortune, and a pampering husband will turn you into a flirt with tasteless behavior. My husand and I have tried a couple of times to get through her "Paula's Party" show, but she behaves like a southern tart...not a southern belle. And diving her tongue into a chocolate fountain, getting into a bed with an engaged couple, licking the corner of a studio audience member's mouth is just beyond acceptable. I wouldn't be surprised if that type of behavior embarrassed or upset Michael. Paula...we loved you from the beginning. Please remember where you came from and have some dignity. We miss you!!

Paula and Richard Pearman

I have tried Paul's gooey cakes and change the recipe from pumkin to sweet potatoe. It was delicious. This and her dressing recipe has gone over really well. I believe with any recipe be it Paula's, yours or mine some adaptation has to be done from time to time. And not always is the recipes on her show her own.

hi
i want to say that YES paula is a success with a lot of hard work! i am also a divorced mom of one beautiful 10 yr old and work part time and would love to start a business in the cooking field and would like to get a few tips from paula. she is my mentor. her son bobby is so cute too!
ciao

I can not believe that people like yourself and others here are attacking a person with these types of verbal comments. What gives you the right to attack someone who is honestly making a great life for her and her family. Just because she can cook very well and it is so evident that you all can not cook. Who cares if a certain dish that you are making does not come out like it is supposed to, at least you are trying a little variety in your life. Get over it and move on. And what ever happened to moderation, if you are not supposed to have a high salt or high fat diet, then stop watching her show and buying her books.

Get a grip!!! Southern food is laden with fat, that's why it tastes so good. If you've got a problem with the cooking why not try your own recipes or find someone else's. Personally, I think Paula's awesome.

Did you poke the cake so the sauce could soak into the cake?

Also for the person who said the fried chicken was too salty. Please don't tell me you used the whole recipe for House Seasoning on the chicken. You were only supposed to use a little bit of it and store the rest. How hard is it to figure that out.

I love Paula's recipes because they don't require expensive hard to find ingredients.

I love to try new things for the holidays and watching paula make "sweetpotato balls" made the little light above my head light up. I did my best with what I had and made the most wonderful new holiday must have. I dont even like sweetpotato anything and this is good and very simple to make even the novice cook can make them.If someone is concerned about fat or salt content stick to northern recipes and leave the good, flavorful, southern dishes to us belles who admire Paula and good food

The only reason I watch Food Network is to see Paula Deen. I love to watch her cook up those delicious meals and make it look so easy. She has an enjoyable show. I have used her recipies and love them. How can anyone not enjoy her wonderful personality? She makes my day. What's wrong with butter and gooey cake? That's real good eatin. Keep up the good work Paula we love ya.

Thanks right people, Paula is not your nurse and you should know best if you can eat this or not!!!!! Don't blame Paula for your bad food judgement, because people who are like me healthy and can enjoy this kind of food occassionally enjoy her recipes.

I have made many of Paula Deen's recipes, and they have come out wonderful !!! I think she has a fantastic way about her, so warm, I lived in Georgia for several years and didn't meet one person like her...my loss...Also with that cake, did you poke it with a fork before you put the sauce on it...thats the secret..it is a wonderful cake... Nothing like gooddddddddd southern cooking...not fat free, but ohhhhhhhhhhh soooooooooo good!!!!!

To tell you the truth, I never heard of Paula Deen but saw her recipe for Fresh Apple Cake in a magazine and cut it out because it loked so good. I made it this afternoon and was very disappointed. At first I thought that 1 1/2 cups of veg. oil was an error but followed the recipe anyway using the 10" tube pan as directed. When I opened the oven to check after 1 hour and 15 minutes, there was a layer of oil on the bottom of my oven apparently leaking from the bottom of the removale tube. The cake was over baked @325 degrees in only l hr. and l5 minutes. I spent over an hour trying to clean the mess in my over and on the heating element. I am now leaving it soak with soapy dish cloths over night to remove it. I am grateful that it did not start a fire. I have been married for 53 years and this has never happened to me before. Needless to say, I discarded this recipe and WILL NEVER MAKE IT AGAIN..

I have watched Paula Deen on Food Network since her first show. She is a great cook and has a grand personality, as do most Southern women. I have to say that every one of Paula's recipes that I've tried have turned out great, even the Grandgirl's Fresh Apple Cake from Georgia. I have been cooking since about age 6 (thought it looked like fun and learned from my Mom). I like to cook a wide variety of dishes, from simple to not so simple. As has been said already, Southern food is comfort food, made with butter and lots of love. If you don't need the salt you can always use less in the meat & vegetable recipes. I tweak most every recipe I make, even some of Paula's. Finally, leave Paula alone. She's a grand lady who has made something of herself with years of hard work.

I think Paula Deen is a southern belle! She is a wonderful and kind person. I don't know her personally but I can tell this just by watching her on tv.I have made some of her recipes-some wonderful, some not(I am sure that I was to blame for this!)As you read the original story, the lady does say she is a comedian and not a Paula hater. So relax everyone! Paula is great and we know it!

Cooking is my hobby; in fact, I am currently working on a Greek Cookbook. I watch the artists on foodnetwork all the time. I love Paula Deen's personality, but as for the recipes - well I have tried many of them, and they never turn out right. Also, on the show, she either gives you the amount of time to bake something, and not the degrees, or visa/versa. What is it with this woman!?

Paula is cool! If you want the full recipe (time, temp, etc.) go to the website. You still have to factor your own personal taste into the recipe. I like her down home recipes and her "us girls hangin' out" way of presenting them.

If you don't love Paula Deen and her recipes, you don't enjoy life! Her reciepes are tasty and they work. OF COURSE you adjust the amount of salt to suit yourself as you cook. All professional chefs use too much salt! I use Paula's recipes and cut the salt. If her recipe has ham in it, I USE NO SAlT BECAUSE THE HAM IS SALTY. Take some initiative folks, AND LEARN TO ENJOY YOURSELVES! Karen

I have had the privilege to meet Paula and went to one of her filmings of Paula's Party "Hot and Spicy". I think that watching her on TV makes people feel as if they connect with her. Would you like a chef or cook that just stood there and mixed stuff together and never once cracked a joke or smiled? I don't think so! This woman is a true Southern and knows where she came from. I just read her book "It Ain't All About The Cooking" and learned somethings that I didn't know about her. If you haven't read the book, I recommend it to anyone who wants to own a business or has been sucessful but it took them a long time to get that way or even if you want a good laugh. Also, I think that everyone in the world knows that Southern food causes fat but that don't stop us Southerners from eating eat. So Always remember, If it ain't got BUTTER or GREASE, It ain't fit to eat!!!

well...i have made many of Paula's recipes at home and have never had a problem understanding that the recipe so often listed at the bottom for House Seasoning, is not to be used all at one time! c'mon, guys! one look at the amount it makes and you oughtta know not to put all that on ya fried chicken!! guess ya'll are not from the South!! just thought it was funny to think of that lady dumpin' all that salt on one chicken!!! i love Paula's recipes and tips...sounds like talking to my own Momma!! use a little common sense and take a little time...these recipes DO work!

Well, I don't have anything to say about Paula's cookin except for IT'S GOOD!!!! I ate at Lady and Son's last week. It was wonderful. I'm commenting to encourage everyone to read Paula's book It Ain't All About the Cookin'. It has truly changed my life. I laughed and I cried while reading her book. She is now one of my heroes. She has inspired me to look at the world so differently and to not be afraid of taking a risk. You just have to read this book. If anyone else has read it, please comment I'd love to discuss!!!! I love me some Paula Deen!!!

I'm still laughing at all the butter! I'm sure Paula loved that recipe as soon as she saw it! Paula should put this in the flyleaf of all of her books!

I've made some of her recipes and adjusted them to my taste, but I still laugh at thinking of anyone putting over a cup of salt *house seasoning* in anything..Oh Lord..!! *whispers a little mantra..1 teaspoon per pound of meat - and even that isn't written in stone* Gotta send some loving understanding to anyone who did that!

i'm here to set the record straight.i had the pleasure of going to the lady and sons restaurant and met the wonderful lady and her two sons. you think shes sweet on tv,huh you need to meet her in person . she brought tears to my eyes. she is AWESOME.

I enjoy the Food Network shows' so much, especially Paula Deen's 2 shows & her sons' doing Road Tasted. I've never ever been to Georgia, & I have an innocent crush on Bobby Deen who just happens to only be a short few years older than I am, & like me, he's single. Thanks for reading this, & God bless Paula Deen & her sons' especially God help Bobby find a beautiful woman to marry & settle down with, us single gals are interested, if he is.

I WATCHED PAULA'S SHOW TODAY, AUGUST 29, 2007. SHE MADE
TOFFEE BARS THAT LOOKED
FANTASTIC. I COULD NOT GET
THE RECIPE DOWN BECAUSE MY
PHONE RANG, DOES ANYONE HAVE
IT?

I have made this cake 5 times it has never turned out like yours its always delicious and I even freeze it if I have any left over and its still good. Maybe its the cook not the recipe.

I enjoyed reading Sara's commentary. I have been there and done that! Sometimes it's a flop and other times it's not. I never thought about using the floppies for household remedies....great imagination. ha ha. If everybody were like Paula, there would be no need for a show. Really, did you just happen upon this site or were you actually searching for another great Paula recipe. Each to his/her own! Happy searching...It's the holidays and I need recipes!

I can't believe that anyone had a problem with the Grandgirls Apple cake. I have made this recipe many times and it always comes out perfect. All you need to do is follow directions.I'm not a great cook and her recipes are very easy to follow. If you are not allowed to eat the butter and fat then her recipes are not for you. Try another show. I have been to the Lady and Sons several times and the food is great. I have had the chance to meet and talk to Paula and she is just like she is on the show. She reminds me of all my Aunts in South Carolina. They all love to cook. I still can't get over the lady who used the entire House Season's on the Fried chicken. I've made it several times and it comes out great.Quit complaining about Paula and just read the recipes.

I can't believe some of you people on here. If you don't like Paula then don't watch her. I think her personality on Paula's party is so funny. I am laughing all the way through the show. If you don't find her licking from a chocolete fountain funny or licking someones face then you definately need to get a sense of humor. Have fun in life, not everything is serious, cut loose a little bit and enjoy her.

I jsut want to say- I am a 27 year old guy, and Paula is one hot momma! She is awesome! Have you ever seen a room full of college guys watch a cooking show? I have, when it's Paula!!

She is the spicy aunt tht we all wish we had, and her food is amazing!! Her stuff isn't too hard to make, and it's absurdly tasty!!

She's not for the faint of heart... or even for the heart-wise... but her personality is top notch, her recipes are out of this world... and she is all the best of the South!

I was wondering if anyone has tried to make her Standing Rib Roast, and if so where can I purchase her House Dressing for the seasoning it calls for.

can you send me the recipe
for stuffed mushrooms. that you did the first of dec.
i love you show.

I think Paula Deen is the relative we all wish we had. She's funny and loving and a little crazy. What I wouldn't give for a nice sister or mother like Paula, and her recipes are great. Espec. the mac and cheese. Awesome!

I agree with everyone else...If you cannot or do not care for butter, salt, etc., then don't make the recipes. Paula Deen is not the only cook in the world...They do have recipe books specifically tailored for those who are health-challenged...Geez! And as for the person who called her a "southern tart"...who made you judge, jury and executioner...Maybe you're just a southern prude...LOL

I have to agree with many of the people that have already posted comments. Paula is extremely funny. I have made some of her recipes and all have turned out really good. You all should try to make the Gooey Butter Cake, it's awesome. And for the lady asking about where to find House Seasoning, you can't buy it it, it's a recipe in the back of her cook book, The Lady and Sons. The recipe is as follows, I cup of salt, 1/4 cup black pepper, 1/4 cup garlic powder. Mix Well and Happy Eating!!

I'm sorry, you can purchase the House Seasonig, it's on her web-site store.

I'd never tried, nor made a meatloaf in my life because I'd already made my mind up about them. I then urned/tuned into Paula Deen.Just the name of a bacon cheeseburger meatloaf rocked . I can't begin to tell how many I've baked and how many I've shared her recipe with. Banana puddin' is awesome and so are nearly all I've tried. I think I was the dummy on the dummy fudge recipe tho! Love her show and her also. What happened to common sense with the chicken lady?

You have all been fooled by this woman who tries to portray herself as a simple southern girl when she has abandoned her humility for fame and attention. A southern drawl and fancy cooking don't go together. And she is always showing off her family all the time (her huge house, her wedding, her family videos). And how many of these recipes do you think she has actually come up with on her own? Paula Deen is the imaginary product of the Food Network. What you see is 10% real, 90% Hollywood and you are all victims of the effective marketing scheme that Deen and others are cashing in on.

I love to watch Paula Deen, love her recipes, her personality, cutest sons ever & the love that she has for living...PERIOD!!!
When I need a recipe, I look up Paula Deen's because I know that hers are the best available. Would love to just sit & talk with her, she seems so sweet.

I absolutely love paula deen. I have read her books, bought her cookbooks, watch all of her shows... Every recipe that I have tried of hers has turned out perfect. I love the not your mamas banana pudding, the elvis gooey butter cake, and the bbq meatloaf! I watched a show yesterday where she made pork slaw egg rolls and I can't get the recipe to work on foodnetwork!! paula rocks!!!

A friend just brought this cake into work and it was wonderful. We heated the slices for 15 seconds and it tasted like it was fresh out of the oven. Delicious.

I'm gonna tell ya'll what for now.She may get a little carried away at times.
But I bet ya keep watchin..
Anyway' SHE REMINDS ME OF ONE OF MY BEST FRIENDS FROM GEORGIA< And that kind of personality is a hard act to follow. Who cares what she does. Your or nobody else is in charge of her. So roll with the flow and either try to keep up or Get off the porch, cause the Big Dogs love it. If it wasn't for her on TV I would go nuts down here in the land of the Geriatrics..ie;;Florida.

I have all of Paula's cookbooks, watch her shows and buy her magazines. I have never tried a recipe that my family and friends didn't find delicious!!!!!!
I have numerous health problems and can't continue to use all of the butter, etc. THat has not stopped me from using her recipes, I have worked on them and made them healthy, and still very delicious! One of my families favorites is "Praline French Toast." I still share her recipes with my friends who still eat the butter etc, and my revised recipes with friends who don't use the butter etc.
Karen

I love Paula Dee and boys. I have several of their recipes. I had a folder full and somehow it disappeared. I have been trying to find her lady and son pork Smoked Roast receipe and finally I found it today. I have made many but unfortunately I don't have them any more. Wish I knew how to find them. I used to go to the food network and I could type in and get them all. I had both son's receipes. Maybe there is a good book or books that would replace all of these receipes. I am talking about 2007 and 8
Thanks I just love all of them.

Oh please!!! People have no common sense. I'm from the south and we never really measure anything. Maybe you should stick to those tasteless northern stuff.

I am an avid fan of Paula Deen & Family, as well as The Food Network in general. I agree with the Paula Deen Fans postings.
But when you see that the the ingredients with butters, oils, shortening etc., you have to know how it is going to be. So instead of knocking Paula -just use other recipes. She didn't get where she is by just making only salads. From the first I saw her on FNW I was hooked- on not only her cooking- but her personality etc., I have recipes that are not PD's and they have cream etc., and my family loves em & I love to bake. And no we are not overweight or in poor health. We just do small portions or bites. And don't you all have a life and something better to do than pick on Paula for heavens sake.
